Weekly Service Sites: ...Barton Hill Elementary School, Royalwood Care Center What is your favorite Chadwick Service memory? My favorite memory from Chadwick Community Service was at Barton Hill Elementary. I remember walking into the classroom with my Chadwick classmate and all the kids stopping their activity and running up to hug us. One of the little girls asked us if we were princesses who had come to help them learn. This moment is one of my favorites not only because it was so cute, but because it made me realize how much of an impact we were making on the kids' day and how much they looked up to us. Why do you do service? I do service because it breaks me out of the bubble of my home and school life in a way that I never really get to experience with the rest of the activities I partake in. By immersing myself in communities that I don't regularly interact with, I have developed countless new perspectives and a deep level of personal humility and respect for others that I would not have otherwise. While people often view community service as simply a way to aid underprivileged communities, I have come to understand that doing service at Chadwick has aided me in more ways than I could count, and I have become a more well-rounded, empathetic, and confident person because of it. What have you learned about yourself through service? I have learned how much I value meeting new people and engaging in their lifestyles, even when this might be challenging or uncomfortable. I have found that I learn so much by stepping out of my comfort zone and immersing myself into someone else's, which community service is the perfect opportunity for. Service has also made me realize that I can handle more discomfort than I realize, and turn it into an incredible experience. Besides service, what else are you involved in? In addition to CSAB, I am part of Peer Mentors at Chadwick. I am a member of the National Charity League outside of school, and I also play tennis as well as the violin. |
