Weekly Service Sites: Head Start What is your favorite Chadwick Service memory? My favorite memory is from the fall Salinas trip I took in freshman year. We were doing arts and crafts projects with the kids at the elementary school and all the members had made example projects for the kids to follow. When I passed my example around, a bunch of the kids started asking me to help them mold their birds in the style I made my example in. It felt nice having my example appreciated and it was super fun helping all the kids. Why do you do service? I find community service fulfilling and fun. There's obviously an aspect of wanting to help others, but I gain a lot of self-satisfaction from participating in service. The few meaningful connections I make, seeing a smile, and just having a fun event to look forward to are all reasons I do service. Service also allows me to hone my own leadership skills, and I am often educated about matters I have never heard of before. What have you learned about yourself through service? I learned that I'm self absorbed: the lives of people that are not in my immediate circle are non-existent to me. Listening to perspectives of the people in communities I serve makes me realize that people have lives and the news I hear on instagram stories are realities for many people. Besides service, what else are you involved in? I play golf, do community theatre, and am a part of Speak Up Cambodia and Chorus. |
